Who is La Teisha Donyea Johnson?

I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. My high school education came from an all-girls catholic school in Inglewood California. I can never thank my parents enough (well my mother because you know husbands go, usually just go along so my dad was probably like ehh whatever lol) for enrolling me in that private school. My college education comes from Southern University Baton Rouge where I studied psychology. I chose this school because I wanted to attend an HBCU (Historically Black College & University) and I also wanted to get to know my father’s side of the family that was in Louisiana. After college, I moved to Dallas which was supposed to be temporary but I ended up staying. I am married with 6 children: two 18-year-olds, two 7 years olds, and two 6-year-olds. I do not have 3 sets of twins lol but I do have 2 sets of twins and a bonus son. My house is a 3 ring circus lol. I am 48 years old, I was born on New Year’s Eve. In 1972, my parents received a great gift, a tax write-off! I love humor. Love to smile and love to see others smile. I’m a super-sensitive person. I often ask God why He gave me every woman’s feelings in the world. I’m so unicorns and rainbows and have to remind myself that life just isn’t like that. I love water. Anything water activity-related makes me happy: the beach, a pool, waterpark, hot tub. Water is so soothing to me. Relaxing. A stress reliever. 

 

Favorite Quote? Why does it resonate with you?

 My favorite quote is “We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.” Maya Angelou 

I love this quote because most of the time people see your success but have no idea what it took for you to get there. Be it a successful marriage, a successful job or business, or a project.

 

What are your favorite 3 mantras to motivate yourself?

“Just do it”, “You’ve got this”, “I can do this”

 

What do you do with 30 min of uninterrupted “me time”?

I like to sit in a warm bath if I have 30 minutes of uninterrupted time.

 

When you are having a hard time getting out of bed on Monday morning, what is the thought that gives you that magic push to start the day right?

Honestly, my bills motivate me on Mondays

 

What can make you laugh out loud when you are having the worst day?

When I’m having a bad day, funny memes cheer me up so I’ll look for some.

 

Netflix binge show on repeat?

I like to binge-watch old 80’s and 90’s sitcoms on Netflix. 

 

How do you stay current on what is going on in your industry?

STUDY!! I study a lot. Skincare changes a lot so I have to stay abreast of ingredients, products, and treatments. I watch skincare webinars and take a lot of continuing education courses.

 

What is the one thing you do for yourself every day? 

I don’t do anything for myself daily lol lunch. That’s about it lol 

 

What did you stop doing to make time for your business?

I didn’t really stop anything. I worked full time at a med spa while I was getting my day spa up and going.

 

What is your advice to other moms starting their own business?

My advice is don’t start a business because you think you’ll make a lot of money doing it. Start it because you love it and are passionate about it. That’s how you’ll make your money because it will show through your work.

 

Tell us about a female role model in your life. A woman that inspires you on a personal or professional level.

My female role model is my mom. She taught me how to work hard.

 

What are you most scared of?

I am scared of failure.

 

Best advice your mom ever gave you?

The advice my mom gave me was to keep going. No matter how hard things get and how bad things seem, just keep going. Even if it’s a little at a time.

 

What is the sweetest thing your kids have said to you?

My kids are my shadows sometimes. One time I walked into my bedroom and I said why do y’all keep following me??  In the sweetest little voice, one of my twin boys said “because we love you” stick a fork in me lol

 

What do you want your children to see when they look at their mom?

I want them to know my love for them. That I work hard for them.

What is your elevator pitch for Destiny Day Spa?

“Hey! I’m a Licensed Esthetician and I’ve been performing esthetics for 18 years. I can help you relax and then get up with great skin. I offer a variety of services and every treatment is customized. Here’s my card with all of my info and I’d love for you to come in for a consultation to see what would be best for your skin. I have 2 locations for your convenience as well as online scheduling. I also have a waitlist.”

 

How was Destiny Day Spa born?

I started out performing Laser Hair Removal and I just fell in love with skin! I worked for a couple of medical spas and when I’d see my upsells I thought to myself, I could be doing this on my own! This, Destiny Day Spa was born!

 

I am crazy about your reviews! Your clients keep recommending you on Facebook and they all have such kind words to say about you. I know you are committed to providing great customer service. Tell us what you are doing differently from similar businesses.

I believe I stand out because my love for esthetics shows in my work. I go out of my way to make each client feel as though they are my only client. And again, I love to see people happy and my love language is acts of service. I surprise my clients with gifts, I show them the progress of their skincare and I let them know that while I am making a living, I really do care about them. I also like to give back to the community when I can. I do school supply and backpack giveaways, last year I did my first dorm supply giveaway, and every October I do free facials for 10 Breast Cancer Survivors that are nominated. This year I also selected 5 Girl Scouts and donated to them. 

 

What is the next project you are working on?

Next project, I’m toying with an idea of a bigger space and an employee. But that just in the idea phase LOL

 

What are the goals for 2021 for your business?

My goal for 2021 is to get back to private label skincare. I had a line and had to change labs so my goal is to have a new private label line by the fall of 2021.
